Bending resistance — conical mandrel

Evaluating the formability and flexibility of the paint serves to understand how the coating would behave if the surface on which it is deposited were to change in shape. Let us analyse the bending resistance test.

The bending test for paint on a conical mandrel is an important coating flexibility test, which is carried out by rolling the surface using a special tester, taking care to place the painted side on the outside.

In other words, it is a method to evaluate the resistance of a paint film to breaking or detaching from the substrate when subjected to deformation.

To carry out the test a special instrument is needed, precisely called a conical mandrel for bending tests, inside which the sheet metal to be examined is inserted. By applying pressure on the lever placed in the upper part of the tester, the sheet metal will bend, thus highlighting any breaks in the coating.

The standard that governs this test is ISO 16474.
