Impact Resistance Test: methods and purposes of use for coating

31 May 2021

The impact test is an extremely useful test, as it allows you to evaluate the results of impacts on painted surfaces.

The impact resistance test is very common, as it allows for the evaluation of the results of impacts on coated surfaces. The tool used to perform the test does nothing but deform, hitting it, the surface to be checked, thus highlighting the flexibility of the paint and the potential cracks that will form.

Impact resistance tests are extremely useful in painting because they measure the resistance of the coating to deformation when a certain load is applied quickly.

To perform the test, which we can conduct in our laboratory dedicated to testing and sampling, we proceed by dropping a hemispherical weight on the coated surface to be checked. The weight, guided by a rail, is made to fall from ever-greater heights until it causes the film to crack; the result that will emerge will be expressed by the relationship between the starting height of the test that will have led to the breakage of the paint and the weight used to hit the surface.

The result is influenced by several characteristics, such as the thickness of the paint, the mechanical properties and the surface of the substrate.

The standard that regulates the test is ISO 6272, which indicates the standard method for evaluating the resistance to breaking or detachment from the substrate of paints when subjected to a deformation caused by a falling mass having a spherical punch of 20 mm in diameter.
