What is the purpose of the surface hardness test for painting?

The surface hardness test according to Wilborn-Wolff, also called scratch resistance test, is a method used to evaluate the hardness of the painted surface of metal pieces. The test is performed using the hardness of a pencil.

Pencil leads, which have a well-classified hardness and ranging from 6B to 9H (a set of 17 pencils), act as a "thermometer" for the resistance of the coating.

The surface hardness test according to Wilborn-Wolff is fundamental to guarantee the quality of the painting of metal pieces. In fact, a paint that is too soft or too hard can cause adhesion or scratch resistance problems.

The pencil is inserted into a special instrument, simply called a scratchability test device according to Wolff-Wilborn, which places them in a position with an inclination of 45°; at this point, the pencil is pressed onto the coating with a force slightly less than that necessary to break it. Hardness and scratch resistance will then be indicated by the type of lead that will not damage the tested surface.

Thanks to the surface hardness test, it is possible to evaluate the hardness of the paint and guarantee the maximum quality of the work carried out. The standard that regulates it is UNI EN ISO 15184:2020.
