Colour measurement test by spectrophotometry

The measurement of colour is done using the spectrophotometer: it describes the colourimetric terms needed to determine the colour coordinates of coatings.

Precise and reliable colour measurement is necessary both in the preventive coating evaluation phase, to scientifically determine which colour shade you want to coat an article or part with, and in the quality control phase, to ensure that the result is as desired.

It is used by all those involved in the industrial coating process: the painters use it to specify and communicate the colour they are going to use, while the customer can request it to check the accuracy of the colour.

This is an objective test that ensures colour consistency at every stage, from preliminary sample evaluations through to delivery of the finished product.

Performing a colour measurement test is quick and easy: once you have identified the item to be tested, simply subject it to the spectrophotometer.

The spectrophotometer is the instrument capable of acquiring and evaluating colour data. By measuring reflected light at a fixed angle, in a sphere or a multi-angle setting, the device can create the colour ‘fingerprint’, i.e. the spectral reflectance curve.

The results can be displayed textually on the instrument’s built-in display (if present) or in graphs created using dedicated software.

The standard governing this test is ISO 7724.
