The importance of surface hardness testing for coating

15 May 2023

The use of the surface hardness test according to Wilborn-Wolff is essential to ensure a high-quality coating on metal parts. Let’s find out more about this essential tool for assessing the hardness of coatings.

Coating is a delicate and complex process, which requires the use of specific techniques and tools to ensure the highest quality of the work performed. One of the fundamental tools for evaluating paintwork is the surface hardness test according to Wilborn-Wolff.

What is the surface hardness test for painting?

The surface hardness test according to Wilborn-Wolff, also called scratch resistance test, is a method used to evaluate the hardness of the painted surface of metal parts. The test is performed using the hardness of a pencil.

The pencil leads, which have a well-graded hardness ranging from 6B to 9H (a set of 17 pencils), act as a “thermometer” for coating strength.

The surface hardness test according to Wilborn-Wolff is essential to ensure the quality of the coating of metal parts. Indeed, a paint that is too soft or too hard can cause adhesion or scratch resistance problems.

The pencil is inserted into a special instrument, simply called the Wolff-Wilborn scratchability test apparatus, which places them in a position with an inclination of 45°; at this point, the pencil is pressed onto the coating with a force slightly less than that required to break it. The hardness and resistance to scratching will then be indicated by the type of lead that will not damage the tested surface.

Thanks to the surface hardness test, it is possible to evaluate the hardness of the paint and guarantee the highest quality of the work performed. The standard that regulates it is UNI EN ISO 15184:2020.
